Rope Rescue Awareness

A Rope Rescue Awareness and Low Angle Operations class will be held on May 2,3,9 and 10 2011 at the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. 2nd Annual Joseph L Feaster Memorial Golf Tournament

For 2011, we will be hosting the 2nd Annual Joseph Feaster Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held on April 16, 2011 at 9:00AM at the Mill Creek Country Club in Burlington and will be open to the public. The tournament will consist of 27 two man teams with a fee of $60.00 per golfer that will include a free golf shirt for participants and a chicken barbecue dinner following the end of play.

Please help us to memorialize a much loved and missed, son, friend, community member and volunteer firefighter, and also help further the education of one of our local students.

Burlington Banquet

The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department held it’s annual banquet and installation of officers on Saturday, January 15, 2011. Honoring all mutual aid departments, the theme of the banquet was “Mutual Aid- Mutual Respect”.

President Susie Smith called the event to order, and the banquet began with dinner catered by Flying “W” Farms. At the conclusion of dinner Chief Tom Simpson introduced special guests in attendance which included WV Rep. Allen Evans.

Guest speaker for the evening was Doug Mongold, Chief of Moorefield Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Mongold is also Fire Training Chairman of the WV State Fire Association, and represents volunteer firefighters on the WV State Fire Commission. Chief Mongold spoke on the recruitment and retention of volunteers in the fire service and the various issues concerning Worker’s Compensation Insurance coverage that affect fire and EMS services. Officers for 2011 were then sworn in by Chief Mongold.

Taking the oath of office as 2011 Line Officers were Tom Simpson, Chief; Robert Haggerty, Assistant Chief; Todd Turner, Captain; Robert Dawson, First Lieutenant; Wendy Minor, Second Lieutenant; Andy Baker, Chief Engineer; and Matthew Baker, Assistant Engineer.
Administrative officers installed and sworn in for this year are Susie Smith, President; Jeremy Riggleman, Vice President; Nan Simms, Secretary; Cindy Ebert, Treasurer; Ali Wiltison, Financial Secretary; Virginia Biddle, Reporter/Public Relations officer; Dale Feaster, Chaplain; and Randy Martin, sergeant at arms.

The newly elected 2013 Board of Directors members sworn in were Buddy Ebert, Jeremy Riggleman, Tom Simpson, Jim Biddle and Dave Haggerty. These members join with the previously sworn in 2012 board members Al Simms, Ali Wiltison, Nan Simms, Dale Feaster and Wendy Minor.

Chief Simpson gave the Chief’s Report beginning with words of appreciation to all mutual aid companies for their support and dedication. Simpson detailed the department’s call volume for the year 2010 with the following; Fire calls totaled 89, of which 32 were mutual aid calls, 16 stand-bys, and brush fires 14. EMS calls totaled 211, of which 7 were mutual aid calls, 13 stand-bys, and 2 transports. Motor vehicle accident calls totaled 92 and public service calls totaled 43, bringing the 2010 call total to 435. Regarding training he noted that the department accumulated a total of 2,785 hours of training which includes in-station training drills and training required by the state of WV. Chief Simpson stated that goals for 2011 are to make strides towards obtaining water rescue and rope rescue capabilities as well as furthering forest fire training.

Incumbent President Susie Smith spoke on various fundraising activities held throughout the year as well as the numerous non-emergency activities that the department held in 2010. She adds that “There will be changes and new activities for 2011, so stay tuned!” President Smith reported that there were a total of 3,626 hours dedicated by the department members to fundraising during the past year. She offered many thanks and praise to the members and her fellow officers for their outstanding dedication and participation throughout the year.

Chief Engineer Andy Baker gave the Engineer’s report summarizing the cost of supplying and maintaining all apparatus at over $50,000.00 for 2010. Baker also noted that over 19,000 miles were accrued on the department’s vehicles in the past year. Special Awards went to the following; Eddie Newcomb Award; Randy Martin, Firefighters of the Year; Jeremy Riggleman and Dave Haggerty, EMS Person of the Year; Karen Staggs and Buddy Ebert, Chief’s Award; Robert Haggerty and Jennifer Simpson, President’s Award; Cindy Ebert and Nan Simms, Top Responder; Bobby Foster, Line Officer of the Year; Robert Haggerty, Administrative officer of the Year; Cindy Ebert, Social Member of the Year; Shirley Hartman and Sonia Baker.

Robert “Herk” Dawson, a member of BVFD since 1988, received his Lifetime Member pin during the evening’s festivities. Presenting him with the pin commemorating this achievement was his father, Robert “Sonny” Dawson with 48 years of membership in the department. Receiving recognition for 200 + calls were Buddy Ebert, Bobby Foster and Tom Simpson. Also recognized for 100+ calls were Greg Bowers, Shane Dolly, Dave Haggerty, Robert Haggerty, Tabitha Turner, Michael Hartman, Eric Hornagold, Randy Martin, Jennifer Nesselrodt, Jordan Placka, Jeremy Riggleman, Al Simms, Karen Staggs, and Todd Turner.

All mutual aid Fire and EMS Departments were recognized for their help and dedication and received certificates of appreciation. Hedrick’s Towing, Moore’s Towing, and R & R Towing were also recognized.

The evening concluded with a video/slideshow presentation by Virginia Biddle showcasing various members, emergency calls, and highlighting our mutual aid departments, as well as a memorial to members of Burlington and other fire departments who have passed away in the last few years.

Burlington Banquet Invitation

The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department will be holding it's annual banquet on January 15th 2011 beginning at 6pm at Station 44. We would like to invite two representatives from each of our Mutual Aid department's to attend with each invited to bring one guest.

This year to show our appreciation for our mutual aid department's we have chosen the theme MUTUAL AID - MUTUAL RESPECT for our banquet. Each will be represented in the decor as well as a video presentation. We sincerely hope each department will have it's representatives in attendance.

Governor Lifts Outdoor Burn Ban
Thu. Sept 30th 2010

Governor Joe Manchin announced Thursday an end to an outdoor burning ban on eight counties in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Grant, Hardy and Pendleton counties are now allowed to burn fires outside. The governor cited recent rainfall as the reason for his decision. The order is effective immediately. The counties are still required to follow fall forest fire rules which take effect Friday.

Apple Harvest Parade

Dear Friends,
The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department will be participating in and hosting, along with several other area organizations, the 39th Annual Old Fashioned Apple Harvest Festival. The festival will be held at the Burlington Children’s Home grounds on the weekend of October 2nd and 3rd 2010.
On Saturday and Sunday the grounds will be open to all and there will be plenty of games, food, arts, crafts, and a lot more for your entertainment. If you have not attended this big event, you won’t want to miss this weekend.
One of the highlights each year is the parade, which will be held Saturday, October 2nd 2010 at 4 p.m. We cordially invite you to participate in the Annual Apple Harvest Parade. Line-up will be held at the Burlington Fire Department at 3 p.m. This parade gives you the opportunity to display your organization’s talent and equipment to the citizens of Burlington, Mineral County, West Virginia and the Tri-state area. We request that you do not use your sirens during the parade, as we want everyone to enjoy it. Candy may be thrown.

Mineral County Fair

The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening of Saturday July 31st 2010 at the Mineral County Fair. Chief Tom Simpson, Assistant Chief Shawn Minor and crew responded with Rescue Engine 44 to provide the stand-by crew at the fair.

The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening of Tuesday July 27th 2010 holding thier weekly Tuesday Drill. Everyone practiced a rapid escape and getting victims out safely.
